Tokyo neighborhoods guide for first time visitors

Tokyo is a collection of very different cities sharing one map. Picking the right neighborhood for your interests, and the right one to sleep in, makes the trip feel much smaller. Here is the short version.

Shibuya and Shinjuku

Shibuya is youth culture, fashion and the famous scramble crossing. Shinjuku is the biggest transport hub, neon nightlife in Kabukicho, and quieter west-side skyscrapers and parks. Both are great bases.

Asakusa and Ueno

Asakusa is old Tokyo, with Senso-ji temple and traditional shops. Ueno has museums and a huge park. Both feel calmer than Shibuya and Shinjuku and are good for slower mornings.

Ginza, Akihabara and Harajuku

Ginza is upscale shopping and dining. Akihabara is anime, manga and electronics. Harajuku is street fashion and Takeshita Street, with leafy Omotesando next door.

Frequently asked questions

Where should first time visitors stay in Tokyo?
