Coin lockers and luggage storage in Japan
Coin lockers are everywhere in Japan and they are the easiest way to ditch your suitcase for a few hours of sightseeing. Here is what to expect, what they cost, and where to look when the row at the main entrance is fully booked.
Standard sizes and prices
Most stations offer three sizes. Small lockers fit a daypack and cost around 300 to 500 yen. Medium lockers fit a carry-on and cost 500 to 700 yen. Large lockers fit a full suitcase and cost 700 to 1000 yen for the day.
- Small: 300 to 500 yen
- Medium: 500 to 700 yen
- Large: 700 to 1000 yen
How payment works
Newer lockers accept Suica, Pasmo and other IC cards. Older ones are coin only and need 100 yen pieces. Some stations now have touchscreens and QR payment too.
When every locker is taken
At Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka stations the best lockers fill early during peak season. Walk to a smaller exit, try a department store nearby, or use a luggage counter or a service like Ecbo Cloak.
Frequently asked questions
Can I store my luggage overnight in a coin locker?
Yes, but most lockers charge per calendar day, not per 24 hours, so overnight storage usually costs two days.
Are coin lockers safe?
Yes. Theft from station lockers is very rare in Japan.
