Suica, Pasmo and IC cards: the simple guide

An IC card is the single best thing you can buy on day one in Japan. One tap pays for trains, buses, taxis, konbini, lockers and vending machines across almost the entire country.

Suica vs Pasmo vs Icoca

They are nearly identical. Suica is easiest to find around Tokyo. Pasmo is linked to the metro companies. Icoca is more common in Kansai. All three work across most of Japan.

Welcome Suica and mobile Suica

Tourists can buy Welcome Suica at major airports. iPhone and Apple Watch users can also add a Suica directly to Apple Wallet and top it up digitally.

Where the card works

Almost every train and bus in Japan, every konbini, many vending machines, coin lockers, taxis and small shops. Look for the IC symbol at the till.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Suica in Osaka?

Yes. Suica works on trains, buses and konbini in Osaka, Kyoto and most major Japanese cities.

Do I need both a Suica and a JR Pass?

Yes. Even with a JR Pass, an IC card is still useful for subways, buses and convenience stores.
