Shinkansen etiquette: how to ride smoothly

The Shinkansen is smooth, fast and easy, but there are a few etiquette rules that make the ride better for everyone. Here is what first-time riders should know.

Keep phone calls off the cabin

Messages and quiet browsing are fine, but phone calls should be taken in the deck area between cars.

Food is welcome

Eating ekiben and snacks on the Shinkansen is completely normal. Just avoid very strong-smelling food and tidy up after yourself.

Watch oversized luggage rules

Some routes require oversized luggage reservations for large suitcases. If your bag is big, check before travel.
