Onsen rules for beginners
A Japanese onsen can be one of the best parts of a trip, but only if you know the rules before walking in. Here is the calm, simple version.
Wash before entering the bath
You must shower and scrub clean before stepping into the shared hot bath. The bath is for soaking, not washing.
No swimsuits
Traditional onsen are nude and separated by gender. Swimsuits are usually not allowed unless it is a mixed or special facility.
Small towel rules
Bring the small towel with you, but do not let it touch the bath water. Most people place it on their head or on the edge of the bath.
