Mount Fuji day trip from Tokyo
You can see Mount Fuji on a single day from Tokyo if you pick the right base. Hakone gives you onsen and the lake. Kawaguchiko gives you the iconic mirror reflection. Chureito Pagoda gives you the postcard shot. Here is how to choose and how to get there.
Best viewpoints to choose from
Lake Kawaguchiko offers the classic mirror reflection of Fuji. Chureito Pagoda gives you the famous five-story pagoda framed against the mountain. Hakone has gondolas, the pirate ship across Lake Ashi, and onsen towns along the way.
Getting there from Tokyo
For Kawaguchiko, take the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki and switch to the Fujikyu Railway, or jump on a direct highway bus from Shinjuku. For Hakone, the Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku gets you there in around 90 minutes.
What to pack
Layers, a wind shell and water. Even in summer the lakes can be cool in the morning. Bring cash for small ryokan and lake cafes that do not accept cards.
