Kyoto temples and shrines you should not miss

Kyoto has more than a thousand temples and shrines. You will not see them all and you should not try. This shortlist mixes the icons with quieter spots, and tells you when to go to skip the worst crowds.

The icons worth the crowds

Fushimi Inari with its red torii tunnels, Kinkakuji the golden pavilion, and Kiyomizudera with its wooden stage and views over Kyoto. Visit early or late and they are still magical.

Quieter alternatives

Tofukuji has spectacular maple gardens. Nanzenji has a giant aqueduct and a peaceful temple complex. Honen-in is tiny and almost always quiet. The Philosopher's Path connects several smaller temples on a calm walk.

Timing and crowds

First light at Fushimi Inari is genuinely empty. Kinkakuji and Kiyomizudera are busiest from 10am to 3pm. Use early mornings and golden hour and your photos will improve too.
