Japan budget per day: how much money to bring
Japan can be done on a tight budget or stretched into a luxury trip. The difference comes down to lodging, food choices and how much you ride the Shinkansen. Here are realistic numbers for 2026.
Budget level: 8,000 to 12,000 yen per day
Hostels or capsule hotels, konbini and cheap ramen, local trains and IC card travel. Doable and still very fun.
Mid-range: 18,000 to 28,000 yen per day
Comfortable business hotels, mix of casual restaurants and a nicer dinner, free use of subways and a few Shinkansen rides.
Comfort: 35,000 yen and up per day
Boutique hotels or ryokan, sushi counter dinners, taxi when convenient and Green Car Shinkansen. The high end can run much higher in Tokyo and Kyoto.
Frequently asked questions
Is Japan expensive to travel in?
It can be, but it does not have to be. Konbini meals, IC cards and business hotels keep daily costs reasonable.
Should I use cash or card in Japan?
Both. Cards are increasingly accepted, but cash is still the easiest payment in many small restaurants and shrines.
