Using coin laundromats in Japan

Long trips through Japan mean dirty clothes. Coin laundromats are clean, modern and usually very easy to use even without Japanese.

What it costs

A regular wash often costs 300 to 500 yen and detergent is frequently included. Dryers usually cost about 100 yen per 10 minutes.

Where to find them

Most residential neighborhoods have at least one coin laundry. Hotels and hostels sometimes have smaller in-house machines too.

Easy machine flow

Load clothes, choose cycle, pay, then move items to the dryer unless you are using a combined wash-and-dry unit. Larger machines are useful for winter coats and towels.

Frequently asked questions

Do Japanese coin laundromats include detergent?

Many do, especially newer machines, but check the panel before starting.
